Writing Course Blogging Journal Assignment 1

I love to write!

Writing allows me to express myself emotionally, mentally and spiritually. My writing journey began at the age of 10 years old, when I wrote my first book of prayers. I enjoy writing inspirational books, poetry, prayers and what I call self-reflections.

I think writing is an expression of one's inner self. Things that people cannot communicate verbally, can be expressed from the heart with a simple pen and paper. Writing gives me the opportunity to sit still and hear from God.

I would love to improve upon being a more creative writer, tapping into creativity that allows people to heal through my writing. I am also interested in becoming more familiar with writing academically, through creating curriculums for elementary and middle school students.

How as writing helped you to heal and find peace?

This writing journey is invigorating and transformational!

Breast Cancer Awareness: My Story

I can remember the day in July 2013, not many days after my 43rd birthday, waiting in fear to hear the results of my mammogram and biopsy. I could feel two lumps in my right breast and I allowed fear to hinder me from going to the doctor sooner. When I received the call from my Primary Care Physician, I was driving home from work in a tumultuous rainstorm in the middle of rush hour traffic. My doctor said, "this would not be a good time to talk and to call her back once I made it home." I remember telling my then-husband of the conversation and thinking to myself, this cannot be good news.

Then the phone call came, the doctor said, "the results of your mammogram and biopsy does show you have breast cancer in your right breast." I began fighting back the tears and thinking, "Why Lord"? No, this cannot be true. My then-husband began to speak the word of God to me trying to encourage me to keep the faith and believe that God is a healer. I tried to believe that and stay strong, but it was incredibly difficult to push past the shocking news of the diagnosis of cancer.

My thoughts turned to my then fourteen-year-old daughter. How am I going to tell her this news? I began thinking and proclaiming, Lord I want to live! I want to see my daughter graduate from high school and go to college, get married and have children. I made the call to my mother who made the trip to the doctor with me just a few days ago. I began sobbing and telling her the news that I had breast cancer. My mother reminded me of my faith in God and encouraged me by saying, "yes its breast cancer but remember who God is, remember how you told others about God and what He will do for you."

I made a decision to continue to stay strong and hold on to God. I needed God and I needed His peace even more in my life. My journey of healing physically, emotionally and spiritually began while pursuing my battle to become a breast cancer survivor. Then I had an encounter with God, early Friday morning in September of 2013, as I sat up in bed. I heard the Lord say, "You can kiss cancer goodbye because you are healed." At that moment I received what I heard from God, jumped out of the bed and did just what I heard God say to do! Five years later, breast cancer-free and I am still praising God for my healing!
